The below cars will automatically be eligible for the 2KCUP. This is only a guide, basically if its under 160hp it will most likely be eligible, anything more is a case by case basis.

  1. What a great Idea.Hans and I would be interested specially if there are options at the same meeting for other persons to drive in there own race as well. ie our Mechanics my grandson in 2 yrs.

    Cheers

  2. Great Idea, i would be real keen if there was a South Island round.

  3. Brillant idea for fostering Motorsport. applicable to not just the youngsters but also others who may not want to or may not be able to spend up large.
    Keep the rules simple. Cheers

  4. MMM No Subura are ALLOWED>?? interesting?

Are turbos allowed if they came out with the car on the showroom floor?

    Madpete

  5. >Are turbos allowed if they came out with the car on the showroom floor?

Turbo’s are banned to keep some sort of parity in the series.

    >MMM No Subura are ALLOWED>?? interesting?

There has been a lot of feedback come in about possible additions, a lot of which are valid contenders, the cars list will be updated tonight.

  6. Hey Guys, this is f’ning awesome. A couple of friends and i are super keen. Interesting on some of the exclusions. Why only corollas and celicas to 1989, why no Honda integras, no skylines?

  7. The initial list was by no means a final release, the first updated car list will be released tonight. Like 2KCUP on facebook to keep updated.

  8. Hi there ,I have a 1984 corolla GT which is already has a rollcage in it . It is as per your rules butcant fit rear seat and door trims, can I run it ?? The class sounds like the class I would enjoy . I am not 21 am 70

  9. Yes, station wagons are ok if they are on the approved cars list.

  10. Hi, seems the list is a lot of newer cars that would not commonly be found for under 2k. Can earlier p10 Primera be included? What about n14 and n15 pulsar?

  11. The list includes all pulsars and primera’s produced before 2000. In terms of why 1999 was chosen, it was chosen as a hard cutoff date for any cars released before 1997 that had a production run past 1999, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will find a 1999 version for under $2k but you could well find the same car from 1995 for $2k.

  12. Sounds like the goods…. No Toyota Starlets on the list??? How do we get a car approved please… ’92 Starlet EP80 2E 1300…

  13. Toyota Starlets up to 1999 have now been added.

  14. Mazda MX5’s seem to be a $3k+ car going by whats on trademe (feel free to prove me wrong). Add in the fact you will have to run a roll cage (being a convertible), there are better alternatives to be had in terms of price, speed and what you need to do to the car in order to race.

  15. Is the cost of the car up to the organisers? I already own a car that I estimate would fall into the approved cars list, but I bought it years ago and it wasn’t for $2000!

  16. Preludes from 1991 onwards only came out with a 2.2L engine?
And the FTO with Mivec puts out 147kw – should this mivec be excluded too?

  17. Preludes from 1991 onwards only came out with a 2.2L engine?
And the FTO with Mivec puts out 147kw – should this mivec be excluded too?

Thanks for the feedback, mistake on my part and has now been corrected.

  18. Would the Mazda Lantis v6 be a valid option? not the type R model.

  19. Would the Mazda Lantis v6 be a valid option? not the type R model.

Yes, even the type R would be allowed as it has 170hp which is line with the other cars (not sure if you could get one for under $2k though).

  20. Would the Mazda Lantis v6 be a valid option? not the type R model.

Yes, even the type R would be allowed as it has 170hp which is line with the other cars (not sure if you could get one for under $2k though).

Well, not a type R no, but the std v6 is around for under 2k

  21. Peugeot 205GTi?
Yes, I’ll add it to the list.

  22. If you are banning type ‘r’ Integras and it seems all mivec mitsi’s, wouldn’t you be safer banning all type ‘r’ Honda’s?

  23. If you are banning type ‘r’ Integras and it seems all mivec mitsi’s, wouldn’t you be safer banning all type ‘r’ Honda’s?

Apart from the Integra type R, what Honda type R’s were released before 1996? As far as I can tell the civic type R was released in 1997. SiR is ok

  24. I think it would be fair to exclude all DOHC VTEC’s, especially since your are excluding MIVECs. DOHC VTEC (not the SOHC VTEC ones which are not all that powerful) engines are a likely to be a fair bit more powerful in their CC class than any of the engines of the other cars available.

  25. I was wondering as the 309 GTI16 wasn’t sold or available in NZ can we make one?

  26. You have said standard spec wheel size must be used. Could smaller wheels be used to keep tyre costs down etc. i.e. a 15×7 wheel instead of factory 16×7?

  27. You have said standard spec wheel size must be used. Could smaller wheels be used to keep tyre costs down etc. i.e. a 15×7 wheel instead of factory 16×7?

Feel free to, we realize a lot of cars will have non standard wheels, but as long as the original width etc is similar there should be no problems. If people start putting 17×8 wheels on the car that came with 15×6.5 wheels we will force them to either go elsewhere or use standard wheels.

  28. You have listed the Rover 220. Should it just include the whole 100 (Metro) 200 series, 214/216 etc., the 400 series and 600 series with 2 litre engines. Readily available under $2,000k.

Fair point, I will update the list.

  30. Hi guys. Would i be able to enter a P11 primera with the vvl motor. It has a blown CVT transmission so would convert it to manual if that was ok

  31. Hi guys. Would i be able to enter a P11 primera with the vvl motor. It has a blown CVT transmission so would convert it to manual if that was ok

You can enter nearly anything as long as its worth $2k or less, has the original motor and gearbox etc. It also has to be a chassis and engine that was released pre 1997 (as a car, you can’t mix and match). Manual conversions “should” be ok if the chassis came with it originally and if all the factory parts are used.

  32. Thank you for your reply. The nissan primera came as a manual option from factory but not with this motor. The automatic trans on these models break alot hence the manual conversion. Car will owe less than $2000.
Could i email you more details to confirm before i start the project.
    Cheers

  33. Cool idea.

That list as it stands will allow both EK9 Civics and MIVEC Mirages.

    Was that your intention?

  34. That list as it stands will allow both EK9 Civics and MIVEC Mirages.

The EK9 Type R civic was released in 1997 (Rule 2.1), this is after the cutoff date of 1996. MIVEC Mirages are ok.

  35. Hi I would like to know if a de -registered car would be eligible? It if fit all criteria and passed scrutineering would it be allowed to participate?
Also are cars allowed any sign writing ? And would a bolt in cage be acceptable also ?
    Cheers

    1. Yes, as long as it has a cage.
    2. Yes
    3. Yes
    4. As longs as its a MSNZ homologated role cage with a log book it will be fine.

  37. Hi
Just an enquiry regarding the acceptability of a ’90 Honda Integra X-SI with the Dohc V-tec engine?

  38. ’90 Honda Integra X-SI with the Dohc V-tec engine?

    This would be fine.

  39. Hi Guys, down here in the Manawatu we have had this scheme running for 5 years. It is called the RS Cup. We restrict the lap times on the cars, anything is eligible, but if you exceed the maximum lap time time penalties are applied. It is cost effective, fun and easy. If you want to enter a car that is not currently eligible for this formula you can enter the Motorsport Manawatu Winter series that starts in June and runs to September. Entry fees $195 per round including transponder hire. Check out http://www.motorsportmanawatu.org.nz for details.

  40. and if you can’t make it to Manfeild this winter there is an off-season 2KCUP round at Hampton Downs on July 21st.

  41. Im sure one would be sble to pickup a commodore for under 2k

  42. Im wondering why you approve of some cars with Vtec yet wont allow anything with Mivec, i would consider that anything with variable cams would be in or out.For a far better series i would suggest out.
Same should be considered of VVL etc.

  43. Im wondering why you approve of some cars with Vtec yet wont allow anything with Mivec, i would consider that anything with variable cams would be in or out.For a far better series i would suggest out.
Same should be considered of VVL etc.

Only the 2L Mivec V6 is banned, this is because it would make far more power than anything else, this also goes for the Type R VTEC and beams toyota. The 1.6 Mivec found in the Mirage is still eligible along with most DOHC VTECH’s and Toyota 3SGE’s etc.

  44. Would a Daihatsu Mira or a Mazda Demio be acceptable?

  45. Would a Daihatsu Mira or a Mazda Demio be acceptable?

    both would be fine

  46. Hi there,

Looks awesome. And a quick browse through TM shows a bunch of cars that could be most interesting. A couple of Honda Civic 1800’s, and a couple of Mazda MX-5’s. Would the MX-5 be required to have a roll bar? What is required to get a Motorsport NZ license?

  47. Would the MX-5 be required to have a roll bar?

The MX5 being an open car will require a roll over bar (half cage)

What is required to get a Motorsport NZ license?

You will need to sit the test and be a member of a car club but that’s about it. Contact Bob Friend on bobfriend47@gmail.com and he will be able to provide you with the appropriate MSNZ license and any other information you may require regarding the license.

  48. How about an 1800cc Lotus Elise?
Is there a limit on the cost of the car?

  49. Is there a limit on the cost of the car?

Yes, there is a limit of $2k for the purchase of the car.

  50. Telstar to 1997 (as per Mazda 626)?

    Accepted

  51. Would a Peugeot 205 be allowable for the series ? I don’t see it listed and I would love to join in (1st time competitor)

  52. Would a Peugeot 205 be allowable for the series ?

Yes, Are you looking at that Gti for 2.2k on trademe? It would probably do quite well.

  53. Cheers for confirming. My Aunt has a 1.4 I can buy for $300. Probably will need new tyres etc

  54. Mid 80’s telstars ok? What if injected ie tx5i ghia, also can the car be front or rear wheel drive? Is there a maximum hp? What about 6 cyl falcons if so up to what year? Thanks

  55. Mid 80′s telstars ok? What if injected ie tx5i ghia, also can the car be front or rear wheel drive? Is there a maximum hp? What about 6 cyl falcons if so up to what year?

As long as the curb weight is under 1500kg, Engine size under 2000cc and its not making any more than 185hp from factory. It will most likely be accepted. It must be a car that was released before 1997 (1996 and before) and produced before 2000 (1999 and before).

  56. So just to confirm, running close to factory wheels specification is ok, aka factory wheels are 15″, but running oem wheels from another manufacturer in 14 or 16″ would be ok?

  57. So just to confirm, running close to factory wheels specification is ok, aka factory wheels are 15″, but running oem wheels from another manufacturer in 14 or 16″ would be ok?

You can’t go larger than the OEM rims that were released with the car.

Running 14″ on a car that came with 15″ wheels would be fine.
Running 16″ on a car that came with 15″ wheels would not be fine.

  58. I having trouble finding the stock wheels (15″ 5×114), and to keep costs on the project down I’d like to run a set of OEM wheels I’ve already got that are 16″… not trying to use super huge jdm wheels… just trying to save money!

  59. What is is the car you need the 15’s for? What do you mean by OEM 16’s? If the car came with 16’s in the day, I can’t really see the problem. I thought you meant OEM wheels off another car.

  60. Are 4age’s allowed in the 1600cc category?

  61. Yes, as long as its a silvertop or less, the blacktop needs to run in the 2000cc class because it makes over 100.5hp per liter.

  62. Is a mx5 allowed in 1600cc class?

Yes, but as it is an open top it will require roll over protection.

  63. Selling a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 as mentioned above for 2.2K. Will sell it for a slick 2K if anyones interested? Search for listing 591244239 on trade me 🙂

  64. Hi just seeking clarification on the 100.5hp/l rule – the 4AGE silvertop is rated at 160hp and is 1587cc, meaning it is 100.8 hp/l. Is it therefore relegated to the 2000cc class?

Also for the wheels, are we to run the exact size wheel our particular model & varient came with, or any size the model was available with? (e.g. Silvia S14 Q’s came with 15×6.5 but were available with 16×7 in some trim levels)

    Cheers, Mark.
ps. congrats on the level of interest!

  65. No reason why not, feel free to enter one.

  66. 4AGE silver top is rated at 160PS, this is 157.81HP. This gives a power output of 99.43hp/l. It will run in the 1600cc class.

You can run wheels sizes from the different trim levels, just be prepared to prove it was available.

  67. If a vehicle came with 185 0r 195 x 60 x 14 tires are the 195 x 55 x 14 toyos permitted ? David

  68. As Toyo are only a supplier and not a control tire, you will need to find an alternative brand that offers the correct size.

  69. With regard to wheel sizes, SW20 MR2s were only available with 15″ wheels from GenIII onwards (>’95). I’m assuming that the earlier MR2s will be restricted to running the factory-sized 14″ wheels?

  70. You have missed that Gen II MR2’s (Jan 1992 onwards) also came with 15″ wheels and as they are the same spec as the Gen I (generally speaking), Gen I, II, III MR2’s can run 15’s.

edit – for those that are now emailing me asking if they can run wheels off newer chassis, the answer is no. The MR2 utilizes the same chassis across all 3 generations that are allowed in the series.

  71. Interesting about wheel comment so althoughhhonda integra came out with 15″ in early models it ended up with 17″ in 98 model a 17″ would be allowed

  72. From what I can research, only the Type R 5 stud cars came out with 17’s. The Integra which is eligible for the series only came with 15’s. Feel free to prove me wrong as I am just going off what I can find on google.

  73. Hi
    Would a CRX be eligible?
Also the ‘up to X year’ – does that incude or exclude X year?
    thanks!

  74. CRX will be legal given you can buy one for under $2k.

Car models need to be released before and including 1996
Cars need to be made before and including 1999

  75. I am guessing not, It needs to be MSNZ homologated.

  76. Ah didn’t think change in stud pattern my mistake. What about the factory option getting Mugen wheels fitted to Honda’s which are period correct. The EF Crx like mentioned above came with a 14″ Alloy but also had option having a 15″ Mugen Alloy fitted. Are we allowed to run on this wheel period correct to that year?

  77. Is there any particular reason why the MIVEC Mitsubishis are not approved? They’re under 100ps/litre, and I don’t see how they’d be faster than the SiR-G Integras which are already approved and racing.

Limiting factor will be finding one for <2k, but it's possible.

  78. The Mivecs are currently excluded as they make 200hp and 200nm of torque. Compare that to 177hp and 152nm that the SiR makes and its not really fair to all the other cars that are entered in the series, even if it is slightly heavier.

Feel free to buy one and take it to a trackday, let us know what times it does and we may allow it as we are only comparing cars on paper at the moment.

  79. So a Honda V Tec would go up a class? (greater than 100.5 bhp/litre).

  80. Given that it is a version that made over 100.5hp/litre new, yes

  81. Im currently living in Australia but planning to travel across for the events as we are in the process of sorting out our car. Regarding the racing license, is there an alternative way of getting the C class license if im unable to attend the meeting in July?

  82. Yes, you can organize a time with a MSNZ examiner, the reason we are having the license evenings is because it saves everyone organizing a separate time.

  83. Still waiting on a reply re; the wheel question I posted a few up.

  84. Hi, car I am looking at has aftermarket exhaust. Allowed?

  85. If it looks standard and sounds standard it will be ok. If not, it won’t.

  86. What about the factory option getting Mugen wheels fitted to Honda’s which are period correct. The EF Crx like mentioned above came with a 14″ Alloy but also had option having a 15″ Mugen Alloy fitted. Are we allowed to run on this wheel period correct to that year?

Aftermarket wheels are not allowed if it means changing the factory wheel size, even if it was period. The main reason being it would be to hard to police what was a period mod and what wasn’t.

  88. Do you really think it is in the spirit of 2KCUP to buy a car and then modify it with period mods and still call it standard? The reason I ask is because if you modify your Honda, now everyone else wanting to enter a similar car has to do the same mods in order to keep up, thus driving up costs. Also by adding all these Mugen parts you might also want to consider rule 2.8.

As that brochure looks like a Mugen brochure and not a Honda one, plus the fact that Mugen is an independent company and is not owned by Honda, how do consider Mugan parts as not aftermarket when the parts would be added after the car has left the factory (gone to market).

Have a look at the Honda Cup if you are wanting to tinker with the car.

  89. It was never to mod it with mugen performance HP mods, I asked as the wheels are already on the car. That’s fine if I can’t run them it was a general question not trying to get a performance gain but to save on cost.

Ive run in Honda Cup in the past with another car but you have caught my eye with your series and wanted to check before coming to hopefully round 0 and have the car fit for 2kcup.

  90. Would a GEN I MR2 that is standard but has had its engine replaced with a GEN III engine be acceptable? I wouldn’t think there is any advantage over the current GEN III’s entered, but I understand what you are trying to achieve by keeping cars in original spec.

  91. Hi there, just bought a mx5 from trademe to compete with, bog standard, just need to know if i’ll need a full cage or will a half cage meet msnz compliance? And if so, is there any bolt in kit that complies?
Thanks a heap for your help. Pumped for the season ahead!

  92. Needs to be original and come with the engine that the car ran in the year it was produced.

  93. half cage will be fine but from what I understand it will still need to be MSNZ homologated. Not sure about bolt on kit.

  94. Are you able to confirm the half cage needing msnz log book. Or should I give them a call. The car I would like to run a 91 integration has a half cage which is certified for road use and wof and reg was built to msnz standards pre the new main hoop thickness rule change. Really hope this isn’t the case. Welcomed to email me to keep this topic clean.

  95. Hi there,

    2 questions;

    1. I missed the licence test, is there going to be another one before Round 0?
    2. Will there DEFINITELY be a under 1000cc class as I would not want to enter/buy a car unless it is 100% guaranteed.

  96. So if I enter with a 1000cc or under engine, you will definitely keep that class?

  97. Ment integra … autocorrected. The car is a Da5 integra in question.

  98. You will need to run the standard tire size, you could probably get two sets of standard wheels for the price of one Mugen Set.

Ive run in Honda Cup in the past with another car but you have caught my eye with your series and wanted to check before coming to hopefully round 0 and have the car fit for 2kcup.

    No worries.

  99. Hi, I was wondering if there would be any thought put to allowing cars to go up an inch in rim diameter but no increase in rim width, just a few of the older cars are getting harder to find on original rims but generally the next generation have gone up an inch in size,….. also in regards to half cages, to the best of my knowlage they do not require MSNZ homologation for use on the road.

  100. would a CRX SIR for $500 that’s been derego for the past 6 years be counted in?

  101. would a CRX SIR for $500 that’s been derego for the past 6 years be counted in?

Yes, but you will need a cage.

  102. 1993 Nissan Sentra SSS? only has an SR20de and as far as I’m aware the lower spec Nissans only have a SR16, much less than any Primera.

  103. Can we bring a mini?
    fully caged 1300cc?

  104. 1993 Nissan Sentra SSS? only has an SR20de
    That will be fine.

  105. I don’t think it will be worth less than $2k, what would you think its worth?

  106. If one was to try and compete with a blacktop 4age toyota and a recent dyno sheet proved it had less than 100.5hp per 1ltr. would it still be eligible for 1501-1600cc class?

  107. And also, can one remove the factory speed cut?

  108. If one was to try and compete with a blacktop 4age toyota and a recent dyno sheet proved it had less than 100.5hp per 1ltr. would it still be eligible for 1501-1600cc class?

    No.

  109. And also, can one remove the factory speed cut?

Yes, as long the as the ECU fuel maps etc stay the same.

  110. Hey guys, I recently bought a 1991 Ford Laser TX3 1800cc to compete in this series but due to a change of circumstances its not going to happen. The car is for sale if anybody is interested. Looking for $1000, has current WOF until December and rego. Please contact me for more info. 02108337179. Based in Auckland. Cheers

  111. I see no MX-5’s in the approved list yet an MX-5 is entered, is it good to enter one ?
    Cheers guys.

  112. Can I race my Mitsubishi mirage cyborg 1987, it’s standard factory 1600cc and non-turbo.
    Thanks

  113. If you can get an AA valuation showing its worth less than 2k, then yes.

  114. Would a 1999 VTEC Honda Torneo be allowed?

  115. DOHC Vtec ok? Non-Type R Honda. Its a 93 Integra SI Vtec 1800, that ok?

  116. Not wanting to speak for the organisers but there are already 2 x Integra DC2 Si’s entered so you should be fine 🙂

  117. It will be fine, given you can prove the value to be $2k or less.

  118. What documentation will you accept that a car’s value is $2k?

  119. Would a civic built in 2000 n registered in 2001 qualify?

Only 1999 or older are eligible.

  120. AA valuation will suffice or proof of purchase. The most important thing is that the car is eligible for the series.

  121. Can airconditioning and emissions systems be removed?

  122. Hi, Would a 1997 Alfa 146 (1.6 TS) fit the requirements?

  123. such a great idea but should relly not limit cars but alow contenders to make the rules up and alow to grow from ground up since theres lots of variables and not much for the broke to do to get foot into motor sport

  139. Is there any plan to allow under-powered/overweight cars to run down a grade? I.e. if I buy an 1800cc car that turns out to be far and away outmatched in the 2000cc class, is there any possibility of running in the 1600cc category if performance is similar to the mid pack cars in that category?

    Yes.

  149. can a engine swap allowed if it comes from the same family of cars ie a P10 body with P11 sr20???

    And are roll cages allowed?

  150. can a engine swap allowed if it comes from the same family of cars ie a P10 body with P11 sr20???

You can’t mix generations of chassis even if they are in the same “family”. What you have suggested would not be allowed.

Any change of spec has to be approved, this is not open and the end spec has to also be eligible for the series. An example would be changing a standard toyota FXGT to the superstrut spec (going from 14″ to 15″ wheels). An example of what would not be allowed is a Gen III motor in a Gen II Toyota MR2 (a configuration that was never released at the factory).

    And are roll cages allowed?

    Yes.

  151. Fiat Brava/Bravo 1600 cc ’95/96 NZ new OK? Slower than Corollas and Mitzi’s in 1600 class. Do you need any more info for eligibility? It’s going to be a great class. well done. regards, Adrian.

  157. Not sure if anyone has posed the question of the 20 valve 4A-GE Toyota engines, but I imagine these would be knocking on the door of their 100.5hp/L limit for their CC rating, especially the black top version (being an uprated version of the silver top). Will 4A-GE Corollas/Caribs and Levins/Truenos be allowed into the series, as they are pocket-rocket motors and would give 2L powered cars a fair old run for their money, or will it be only the #A-FE motors eligible?

Also the Ford Telstar 4cyl model should be added to the list as its basically the same as a Mazda 626.

  161. Hi Guys,
I’ve been looking around for a car, but meeting that 2k rule is tough, after many hours of
Searching and missing out on many, I ended up with a Alfa Romeo 146 for $800.. {So if you wanna give me $2500 at any time for it, no problems there.} I know Alfa’s are crap.. Oh I meant to say unreliable. And after my experience with the 155 you’d think I would have learnt something, never the less here I am, besides have you seen how cheap these little beauties are ? They basically give away 156 models.
My Alfa: 146 1999 model 1600cc weight 1190kg engine 88kw. as per Alfa Romeo spec;s and web site.
I think it meets the 2kcup rules for power to weight ratio, year, and cost. But it’s not listed, {probably because someone isn’t dumb enough to race one} So would you let me come play in your series, pretty please….. regards Rodin

  162. I ended up with a Alfa Romeo 146 for $800

  164. Great racing on the weekend guys, the driving standards were, I thought, well above expectation, keep it up.
I did note that the ride height on a couple of cars was much lower than standard, please clarify if this is OK within the rules. If so then what are the guidlines? Does this fit with the low cost ethos?

  165. hey , im 14 is there a way i can get a license and race ? if not what is the requirements ? age ? road licence ? cheers

You will be able to race if you get a C grade motorsport license. There used to be a limitation of the capacity you could drive but I can’t find it in the manual anymore. Someone else might be able to answer this.

Springs are open for a few reasons:

    1. Safety and drivability, some cars have a high risk on rolling over when standard springs are used, they can also be uncontrollable once they loose traction.
    2. There is no easy way to verify they are the standard springs.
    3. A lot of cars have many variations of standard springs depending on market and year.
    4. The cost of a new set of springs is relatively cheap at around $150-300 a set new, or $100 or less second hand.
    5. Most of the faster cars are still running the standard springs so it shows you don’t have to change the springs in order to be competitive.

  167. Hi,
What are the rules on body kits. I’ve seen a couple of ideak cars for sale but they have bits of plastic (body kits, front spoilers and skirts) stuck all over them.
